Massage Cupping

  • What is massage cupping?

Massage cupping uses glass or plastic cups to create a vacuum seal on areas of the body. The most common area for massage cupping is on the broad area of the back. Larger cups are used for this, and a strong vacuum will mimic the rolling action of deep-tissue massage without any discomfort. It is the best deep tissue massage available as it has been found to affect the body up to four inches into the tissues.

It uses gentle, controlled suction to open up muscle tissues, increase local circulation and drain fluid. Like massage, cupping can also be used to relieve stress, tension, and lower blood pressure. Because many reflex zones are often found on the back, abdomen and legs, cupping can promote general health too.

  • Does it hurt?

While there can be moments of discomfort if the muscles are overly tight, or if the vacuum is too strong, in general, the sensation of cupping is quite pleasant. The cups can be adjusted to one's level of comfort.

    How does it work?

Cupping massage brings blood to the surface of the skin and causes tissues to release toxins, it can also activate the lymphatic system, bring blood flow to stagnant muscles, and loosen adhesions and stubborn knots in soft tissues.

What are those big purple marks?

The dark purple spots, contrary to popular belief, are not bruises. They are the manifestation of internal stagnation and congestion brought to the surface of the body. They do not appear on everyone. Only those with a significant amount of congestion, poor blood flow and lymph drainage will have them. These marks are therapeutic as they bring the stagnation out of the tissues and to the surface and diagnostic as the color and location of the marks provide an insight into the patient’s condition.

Is there anything I should do, or not do after a cupping treatment?

As with any kind of deep tissue work, be sure to drink plenty of water after your session to flush out the toxin that has been release by your tissues. It is advised to avoid any strenuous physical activity immediately after your session, alcohol and cold drink consumption. Ideally, if allowed, take the rest of the day easy. Rest is important for the recovery. The marks usually disappear within a week.

    How are the cups sterilized?

The cups are first washed with antibacterial soap with warm water, and then placed in an enclosed sterilizing compartment with high temperature and UV light for 30 minutes.
